Passing of Former President Vincent J. Dougherty |
The NYPD Emerald Society mourns the sudden passing of our Past President Vincent J. Dougherty, age 84 while in Florida. He was appointed to the NYPD on March 30, 1973, and he retired in the rank of Captain in July 1996. He proudly served as our Emerald President for a two-year term in 1988-1989. His dedication and leadership of the Emeralds was unmatched. Those who served as president in the ensuing years knew they had a most reliable source when leading the largest fraternal group in the NYPD. Vinnie made himself available, offering sage advice when called upon. In his retirement years he enjoyed his second home-state of Florida. While back in NYC he would often stop by a Monthly Emerald Meeting. He along with his brother Tommy, a retired NYPD Detective, and former Board Officer, would catch up with their fellow old-timers at a table filled with friends. To those who knew Vinnie Dougherty, he personified the classic Brooklyn Irish Catholic Cop, and he treasured that identity with his heart and soul.
He was a Faithful parishioner of St. Ephrem's Church Brooklyn and Our Lady Queen of Peace, New Port Richey, FL. Past Financial Secretary of the PBA, NYPD Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, Cathedral Club of Brooklyn, Army Veteran serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam Era. Proud Alumnus of St. Teresa of Avila School in the 9th Ward, The Most Holy Trinity High School, St. Francis College (BS),
John J. School of Criminal Justice (MA), FBI National Academy Session 98, University of Virginia.
Predeceased by his parents, Molly McGarry (Co. Longford) and Michael J. Dougherty (Co. Mayo) and his siblings Brendan T., James F. (Patricia), Joan Ryan (Robert) and Mary Frances. Survived by his siblings Dr. Michael J. (Mary Anne), John P. (Elizabeth), Dr. Gail, Margaret Russo (Anthony), Thomas A., Richard M. (Lucy) and many beloved cousins in the USA, Ireland, and England. Vincent will be terribly missed by his many nieces and nephews who loved his stories, traveling the world with him and called him "King of All Lands East of the Rockies", and his great nieces and great nephews who adored him.
Vincent was devoted to his family, his friends, his church, his country, and his Irish heritage. He was proud to carry the name of an Italian soldier, the brother of the nurse who assisted at his birth and received word that her brother was killed in the war while Vincent was being born. He had great devotion to the Blessed Mother and loved to tell everyone that Jesus is my friend. We who are left behind know this to be true. His passing leaves a great void in all our lives.
