PASSING OF FORMER PRESIDENT RICHARD BERGIN

The NYPD Emerald Society mourns the passing of our Past President Retired Detective 1st Grade Richard Bergin 83, on June 22, 2023, while in hospice care at NYU Hospital in Manhattan. Richie served as the President for a two-year term in 1992 through 1993. He remained active in many of our events throughout his retirement years. Most recently he attended our Annual Dinner Dance in February, with his wife of 50 years Eileen and other family members. They were all warmly greeted by many old friends.

Richie was born in Queens to his parents Sophie and William Bergin. As a young man he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served from 1958 till 1967. His time and training in the military shaped him for the rest of his life and maintained his positive attitude towards any challenges he faced. He certainly personified the saying "once a Marine, always a Marine." On April 3, 1968, Patrolman Richard Bergin was sworn into the NYPD. His career in uniform took him to Precincts across the city including the 23rd in Manhattan, the 40th in The Bronx and the 71st in Brooklyn. As a detective years later in Brooklyn at NSU 12 he was called upon to train Rookie Cops. He really enjoyed breaking in the young cops and showing them how to do the job. Safety and camaraderie were always stressed when on patrol with Det. Bergin. As a detective in plainclothes he worked in the Robbery Division and the 69th Precinct Squad and in 1993 he was promoted to Detective 2nd Grade. While working in Brooklyn North Homicide he was recognized for his outstanding work with a well-deserved promotion to the distinguished rank of Detective 1st Grade in June of 2000. His notable career of 34 years of service ended when he retired on his 63rd birthday in July of 2002.

In his home life paralleling his time on-the-job, Richie married Eileen in 1973. Soon after Timmy was born and over the next 17 years Richie, Patrick, Teddy, Kevin, and Sean followed, before "Little Eileen" broke the streak of 6 consecutive baby boys! When not spending time in their beloved neighborhood of Maspeth, the Clan was often at an Emerald Society gathering. The Bergins were always "the life of the party" and brought smiles and laughter with them. Richie and the gang enjoyed the annual trip to the beach in Ocean City, Maryland. Perhaps 2 of Richie's happiest moments as an Emerald, were when he was sworn-in as the President of the Society surrounded by family and friends. The 2nd occasion was years later when his son Timmy was sworn into the same position.

In recent times Richie's health declined and the sudden loss of Timmy in late 2020 took a heavy toll on them all. Now, Richie is at peace and reunited with Timmy. They both left behind so many great memories.

Richie Bergin is survived by his beloved wife Eileen, devoted sons Richie (Lisa), Patrick (Marianne), Teddy (Gina), Kevin, Sean (Jeanette) and loving daughter Eileen (Steve Cunningham) along with his adoring grandchildren Olivia, Connor, Peyton, Paige, Emily, Cole, Emmett, Paisley, Jenna, and Shea.
