PASSING OF PATRICK WHALEN SR. 86

The NYPD Emerald Society mourns the passing of our retired member former Detective Patrick Whalen Sr. age 86, the father of our President Peter Whalen. Patrick was born in November 1929 to Irish immigrant parents who resided in the Bronx at that time. His father Michael was from Galway, while his mother came from Mayo. Eventually the family with five young children would settle in Brooklyn. In 1951 Patrick met Anna Pauline and they married in 1953. In 1955 Patrick was appointed a Police Officer with the NYC Transit Police. While also serving as a US Army Reservist he was activated during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. He remained on active duty for another 2 years before returning to police duty and fighting crime in the subway system. During his distinguished twenty year career, Patrick was cited for heroism and was the recipient of three Medals of Valor. His exceptional work led to a promotion to the rank of Detective. In 1968 he was the first member of the Transit PD to be awarded the prestigious Combat Cross. During his time as a Detective he became active with union affairs and the Detective Endowment Association. He was involved and later lobbied for the 18 Month Bill for the Detective Shield. In 1975 the father of six children retired from law enforcement. In his second career Patrick was a Security Supervisor for the American Broadcast Company (ABC). After retiring in the early 1990s, Patrick and Anna enjoyed much of their time at their second home upstate in Cairo, NY. In later years as Anna's health declined, they would return closer to family and their roots back in Brooklyn. Good times with the family were most memorable to Patrick, especially holiday get togethers with the grandkids. He was proud of the law enforcement legacy his family continued in NYC, with his three sons on the job. Peter currently a Detective in Emergency Service Truck-6, Patrick Jr. a Sergeant in Employee Relations and Thomas a retired ESU Cop. A new generation, with granddaughter Mary a Police Officer in the 70th Precinct, keeps the Whalen name honorably serving the NYPD. Patrick Whalen, who as part of what has been coined "the greatest generation" was indeed a great role model for the Whalen Clan. He will be missed dearly by his loved ones, as he now joins his adoring wife Anna and their cherished son Kevin in heaven. Patrick is survived by his son Thomas (Gerlyn), Patrick Jr. (Mary), Maureen, Joseph (Janice), and Peter (Madeline). Grandchildren Mary, Thomas, Colin, Darraugh, Kiera, Peter and Victoria. Great grandchild Jaesen. His sisters Catherine Cordaro and Mary Wallace.
