Passing of Retired Member Joseph Ennis
December 4, 2014

The NYPD Emerald Society mourns the passing of our longtime Retired Member, Joseph O. Ennis 69, a highly regarded and respected lieutenant. He died Thursday in Staten Island University Hospital, after a long illness.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, he graduated from the former Alexander Hamilton High School in his native borough. He attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Manhattan. Joe Ennis had a distinguished 27-year career with the NYPD and his last command was in the office of the Chief of Patrol. He retired in 1996 and remained active in Emerald Society events, including attending meetings and trips. Ennis was a history buff and he enjoyed Irish music, fishing and spending time with his family, especially while vacationing in Jupiter, Florida. He was an eternal optimist and a great man who would do anything for anyone, his family said.

Proud of his Irish roots, he hosted an annual St. Patrick's Day party and celebrated with family and friends, they added. Joe was also proud of his service in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Pensacola, Florida, and in Rota, Spain.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Monica, his daughters, Kerrie Verticchio, Christine Hanson and Maureen Ennis, his brother, Robert, and four grandchildren.

Arrangements by the Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, 30 Nelson Avenue in Staten Island. Viewing Friday 2-4 & 7-9. Mass 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady Star of the Sea RC Church, 5371 Amboy Road. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
