Death of Retired Member Kevin Coursey July 19, 2012 |
President Sean Patterson and the NYPD Emerald Society, mourn the death of our long time retired member Kevin Coursey, on July 19, 2012. Kevin passed away peacefully, during the early morninghours Thursday, after being hospitalized last week in cardiac arrest. Throughout his long and distinguished career, with the NYPD and into his retirement, Kevin was always actively involved with the Emerald Society. He regularly attended our General Meetings and always enjoyed playing in our golf outings. He always seemed to travel with his own personal entourage, made up of his longtime cronies from the job and Rockaway. After serving in the US Army for 2 years, Kevin entered the exciting world of the NYPD. He started in the 75th Precinct in Brooklyn then moved on to the 44th Precinct up in the Bronx. His good police work led him into the investigative field, a promotion to Detective and the prized Gold Shield. During those years he played football with the PBA Team as a lineman. While donning uniform number 68 he was a fearsome figure on the gridiron. He loved the competition and camaraderie that came with the game. Meanwhile his police assignments and new challenges led him into the Narcotics Bureau, the DEA Task Force and the 79th Precinct Detective Squad. An old-school guy, Kevin earned a reputation as ahard-nosed investigator, well regarded by his bosses and peers. He took great pride in tracking down bad guys and protecting good people. Punks and felons feared him, as he kept law and order in the roughest neighborhoods of the city. In his final assignment at Brooklyn North Homicide he rose to the prestigious rank of 1st Grade Detective, a well deserved honor for a guy who gave his all to the NYPD. His many friends and loved ones will remember Kevin Coursey for being a colorful character. They will never forget his great stories, bright smile and laughter. He is survived by his devoted wife Kathy, their four beloved children Kevin (FDNY), Darren (FDNY), Tara and Brynn along with four cherished grandchildren.
