Death of Probationary PO Stephen Smith October 31, 2010 The NYPD Emerald Society mourns the tragic death of our member Stephen Smith. He was a recruit in the Police Academy since being sworn-in this past July. Stephen died of injuries he sustained when his motorcycle struck a guardrail on the NYS Thruway Sunday afternoon. He was returning back to Queens after helping out at his Mom and Dad's new home upstate. When he took his oath this past summer, Stephen realized a long time dream to become one of New York's Finest. His Aunt Monica a detective in Brooklyn was said to be his inspiration for coming on the job. The 24 year old first generation Irish-American leaves behind his loving parents Kathleen and Stephen. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews along with scores of friends.
